happy new year !



happy new year everybody ! and a great and successful 2008 , all the best and may your wishes come true !
this is the traditional food for holidays in romania. it's called "sarmale" . minced meat with spices , rolled in cabbage leafs (sweet or pickled) and boiled . served with "mămăligă" , boiled corn flour (something like polenta) , sour cream and hot peppers . and of course , red wine .

Twenty years ago we had a high school student from Belgrade for a year. I ask one of my patients what was the most common meal that our student might miss while in Florida. He told me sarma and he described it, but he didn't know how it was made. My wife could make stuffed cabbage roles but I wanted something more true to sarma. It took a few months to get a recipe (one for sarma and one for galumpkis). They were less sweet then wife's. I made them. The student didn't know what it was until it was in his mouth. He almost cried with joy. And most of all, he couldn't believe that a man made them. Every one in our house cooks. I used to be the main cook for our church.

Very delicious. Love this dish.
We have it in Bosnia too. We call it sarma and eat it only with sour cream.
