saturday night out

on saturday night we went out for dinner . we wanted something different so we went for chinese food at this new place , "lotus express" on "muresenilor street". in brasov there are only 3 places where you can eat chinese and no other restaurant where you can have asian food , although , ocasionaly , you can find a curry on the menu . it's a shame ! i think romanians are too traditional when it comes to food . i love asian food , indian , indonesian , malaysian , but of course i didn't know anything about it before my visit to singapore .
in the picture you can see something that on the menu was called "gung bao pork"(probably what is known as "kung pao") and "ciao ciao pork" with fried rice . i googled for the recipe and it's very different from what we had . i don't know if it's a variation or an improvisation . no chop sticks (i can't use them anyway but still ...) and we had to ask for a spoon for rice (strange) . the food was good but the rice was not . the atttitude also not good , especially for a new restaurant . the price - 6 euro .
this experience is another example of my hate-love relationship with brasov . it's very hard to find something completely nice here , there's always something else that has to be bad .

RO, I am sorry to hear your dinner was not all good. I have to admit, the food looks pretty tasty. Oh, and the picture of the front door, I could not help noticing the SNOW in the reflection. Brrr... A person gets spoiled living in the southern climates. But I do miss winter weather sometimes.
Thanks and keep warm,
Wayne

Is the restaurant run by Chinese? Do you know if at least the cook is Chinese/Asian?

6 Euro for the whole dinner, drinks included? How does that compare to a regular dinner?

It's exactly the same here in Poland. There are many restaurants but they are mainly Polish...and the food tastes all the same. As I mentioned in my 'R is for Restaurant' post...there is now a Japanese sushi restaurant here in Toruń...but of course the chefs are Poles...kind of defeats the object really.

We used to have an Indian restaurant in town...but it was disgusting. Ask for some poppadoms...and all you got was a plate with one greasy poppadom on it...and no mango chutney dips...nothing!!!

I came back hoping you'd answer the questions I left for you in my previous comment. Too bad you couldn't find a minute to do so...

Sibiu had a few really nice restaurants, but I did leave thinking I should go back and open a restaurant with decent vegetarian food - I'd make a fortune!

Thank you, Ro, for leaving the answers on my blog today. I shall apologize for not realizing that Internet connections can be slow/faulty at times. The blogsphere, however, is filled with unanswered commenter questions which I find rather frustrating (perhaps the solution to this is simply not to ask questions).

Back to your post, if the cooks are Romanian then, yes, I can see your disappointment. It takes many years for a non Asian cook to learn the right techniques employed in Chinese cooking. Perhaps this particular restaurant owner thinks that most Romanians/fill-in-nationality "couldn't tell the difference" and maybe they are right. Only competition can improve quality and value, at least that's the way it works on this side of the pond.

Your prices for pizza and pasta are very good and the Chinese restaurant seems quite expensive in comparison. Here you pay ~$16 for a large pizza at a restaurant (take out is much less) and less than $10 for most Chinese/Asian dishes.

If the service isn't that great and the food isn't authentic, then you are certainly being shortchanged and I'd feel just as frustrated as you do.

anonymous : sorry for that . yes , it's still open . not very visible though . let's say you go on muresenilor street from the opposite end to the council square on the left side , after the rossignol pub , in between an air tickets agency and a bank .
there is also another chinese restaurant in the council square , this one has a big sign "china restaurant" . if you're still in brasov , hope you can find it .
