update : this is a detail from the old council house in the old town centre and it represents the coat of arms of the old brasov . the city used to be called kronstadt and corona meaning crown city .

if i remember right , this is dealul cetatii (citadel's hill) street , a little known part of the city , a quiet residential street with some old houses . great place for a walk , coming from the city center on iorga street , eminescu street , dealul cetatii street and going down to the long street then back to central park .

it was the first shopping centre with individual small shops that took the concept of a bazar a step further .

now the majority of the shops are selling clothes and shoes and mostly from china and turkey , relatively cheap but the quality , design and style also on the "cheap looking" side although there are so many shops that if you really want something and you're patient and resistant you might find something nice . the place (together with the nearby older building) is a lot bigger than you can see in these pictures and everybody knows about it and i'm sure that everybody in brasov has something bought here .

2 new trees growing from a building on republicii street right in the heart of the old town . it looks funny and interesting but i'm not so sure the owners or the people who live there are that happy about it because you can see it's falling apart although it was renovated a few years ago .

the quality of light in the afternoon sun when you are usualy coming home.

the entrance of an old villa "villa climi" on eminescu street on the citadel's hill .

sometimes a picture is not enough and it doesn't worth a thousand words . you have to be there , to feel the sun , to see the shadows , to listen to the street's noise , to smell the scent of time in the old walls of an old house . just passing by during an afternoon walk in the right place and you can be in a different city and in a different time .

...and in case you want to be up to date with the latest gadgets here's the samsung showroom on wheels . i don't care for mobile phones or even buses but this strange looking automobile is interesting , especially the front and the driver's seat. it was parked in front of the "aro hotel" last week .

last weekend we celebrated here the "harvest day". many years ago this used to be quite a big deal but not anymore . it used to be a real fair and it felt special , maybe because it was one of the few . now , our autumn habits have changed and this fair is nothing but some decorations in the city markets (by the way , brasov has 6 markets but only 3 important ones : star ; dacia ; astra) a little bit of food (meat+fire=love) a little bit of drink (must and wine) and a little bit more fruits and vegetables on the stalls . but the feeling is lost and this year the whole thing was pretty quiet.

3 weeks ago , between 2 and 7 september the "golden stag" was once again visiting the old council square in brasov . it's a pop music festival and international contest started way back in 1968 . after only 4 years the communist regime decided it's too much freedom and too much joy so a long silence of 19 years ended in 1992 when the festival moved in the square . since then , almost every year we have a week with a lot of music and a great summer atmosphere . it's definitely one of the best times to visit brasov (if you can find a place to stay). the festival has 2 parts , an international contest and guest performances of romanian and foreign stars. during the years a lot of well-known artists perform live in brasov and a funny fact , even christina aquillera partipated in the contest before she was a big star.

during the festival the old town is vibrating with music and more . it's a great time and if the weather is good . like it was this year , it's sightseeing during the day , concert in the evening and party after hours . of course , a lot of stalls with snacks and souvenirs , other connected events , all the bars . cafes and restaurants with outside tables are trying to cash in , the prices are slightly higher , more visitors and tourists ... and so on . but it's something in the air , brasov becomes a place where you like to live.

every tourist in brasov has a picture with this building . this is the center of the old town , the old council house . because it's more than 500 years old during its life it use to have different functions and now is part of the brasov history museum . this picture was taken during the "golden stag" pop music festival 3 weeks ago . i'll show you more about this festival tomorrow .

ready to open the first (and the only real one) beer barrel ...

so . how was it ?

unfortunately i only have one good thing to say about it : the atmosphere was great ! it was a real party and you can see that the people really need this kind of fair . the german band (wirbelwind) really fit the event with their old euro-pop covers and drinking songs , most of them in german of course (they have a lot of experience with this kind of beer festival) and they were the best part of the fest .

other than the atmosphere ... a lot of snacks : mici ; sausages ; ribs ; trout on a stick ; prezels ; crepes ; waffles ; donuts ; caramel apples ; popcorn ; boiled corn ; cakes ; gingerbread and many more but the real food was far from the german quality promised by the organizers and it was quite expensive . for the drinks , they only had 5 types of beer , none from germany and it was not so good and more expensive than at a restaurant and they only used plastic cups . also some sodas , fresh orange juice , cocktails , must (unfermented new wine) and mulled wine / gluckwein and coffee .

the location has a great view and very nice surroundings but too small and crowded and also the service was poor and unfriendly , probably they were overwhelmed by the crowd but an incredible thing happened , after the first day when they saw it was quite a success , some of the prices were higher .

i can't wait for the next year and hopefully it's gonna be a lot better .

Oktoberfest is in Munich and is still on till october 4 , but Brasov has (first time this year) a little oktoberfest . Maybe not a big one but the newest one and the one with the best landscape and view ... hahaha . But it was very short , 18-20 september only.

We used to have beer festivals before but this time it was a strong german touch including the consul of Germany in Romania and the mayor of Nuremberg , a german band and supposedly german food .

More about the food and beer tomorrow but let me tell you that we were lucky and the weather was great so the place was really crowded all the time . I would say a big succes so maybe next year they will organize it better , they will also use the stadium across the street and it's gonna be longer . Great idea , great response from the public , but everything else was "romanian style"...

the ropemakers' bastion is in the middle of the south-eastern side of the brasov medieval walls and was mention in a document in 1416 . used to be 12 m high in a hexagonal form . it was almost destroyed in a fire in 1689 but rebuilt . the house inside was built in 1794 .

we will make a tour of the medieval fortification of brasov (check the map from yesterdays post) . walls , bastions , towers ... old rocks . 500 years ago these were some powerful defensive weapons . i don't think they saw much "action" but this was the point , to scare away the enemies . still , some parts were beaten but another kind of enemy : time ....ok , let's start with the "bastionul tesatorilor" = linen weavers bastion on the southern corner . today a museum that can be visited on the way up on tampa mountain , it is the largest medieval bastion in brasov and the best preserved among the seven initial watchtowers built around the city walls. it was first built during 1421-1436 and rebuilt in 1570-1573. inside the construction there are three main protective corridors. The wooden galleries surround a small central square.

a good view of the old town from the tâmpa mountain . you can see that it is very clearly delimitated and used to be surrounded by fortifications , a huge defence wall which is still standing today on two sides the ones with the hills where the development of the city didn't ask for demolitions . in the recent years the walls , the towers , the monuments were renovated and at least we know they'll have a longer life .

the map and the model (at the history museum in the old council house - the one in the middle of the square) shows how the old brasov and the defence system looked like a few hundreds years ago .

this one is taken from the old council square so you can see layers of old architecture . "the black tower" (yes , i know it's white but there is another tower called the white tower) was erected between 1460-1494. It has a semicircular shape and it is 14m high.

strange weather today . very warm for december and windy . really windy . so windy that the christmas tree in the old council square which is 29 m high fell down . i didn't see it but i heard on the news . in 2 days we have the official opening for the holidays season with the light up so i hope they will fix it till then . fortunately nobody got hurt .

update : yes , the tree is down . so sad ... and i don't think they can fix it in time for saturday because i understand that it's broken .

in brasov we had a special event , a religious ceremony for the relics of st andrew which are for the first time in brasov . st andrew is the patron saint of romania (and from what i know from jackie , of scotland also) , yesterday was st andrew's day , today is romania's national day ... so , you know ... hehehe

it is very warm for november ... and i like it a lot ... hahaha

this one is from the tâmpa promenade and is one of my favourites . really looks like a fairytale land with the colours and the beams of light ... but if you look closely you can see a public light pole ... hehehe

i can get rid of a song inside my head ... i got it from a tv show episode (cold case) , you know , where they solve old police cases and they make you remember the year of the case by a soundtrack with songs from that time . it's "heaven" by bryan adams (cheesy , i know)

speaking of the tâmpa promenade and the tramway to the top of the mountain here is the station and a view of the cable car.not much to do when you're on top but there is a restaurant and you can go to the "brasov" sign . the main reason to go is a wonderful view of the city and the surroundings .

a restaurant on the tâmpa promenade near to the tramway to the top of the tâmpa mountain , casa padurarului = forester's house was a favourite place for us in highschool , skipping class to go for a beer .

probably the best place in brasov to get fresh cakes and sweets . more expensive than the others but you can see (taste) the difference . it's on baritiu street , right across the black church .

this is the sports highschool stadium . completely renovated and transformed a few years ago , it's a great place for concerts and festivals with beautiful views and surroundings .

a street next to the tâmpa promenade with beautiful big houses and a great view . a nice place to live . brasov has a lot of communist apartment buildings but we are lucky to have an important part of the old town with houses and nice narrow streets .

yeah , on sunday we have elections for county councils , city councils and city mayor .

this one , with a banner big as a building is the mayor of brasov and he will most probably get re-elected .

these are from republicii street . this street is full of tables from all the cafes and restaurants so the day before they had to take everything out of the way and a few hours after the parade everything was back . btw , a few days ago i counted and there are 19 cafes and restaurants with alfresco areas in the middle of the street taking maybe 2/3 of its lenght . maybe one day it will be from one end to the other . oh , and one more thing , after the parade the cleaners were really busy with all the "gifts" , horses "gifts" . hahaha

to see horses running on the streets and no cars at all it was amazing . if you ever want to visit brasov , you should consider coming during this festival , it's probably the best time .

the other 3 groups (best costumes) : junii brasovecheni (old town brasovians youngsters) , junii rosiori ( redish youngsters) , junii albiori (whitish youngsters) .
they come down from schei on baritiu street , old council square , muresenilor street and then return on republicii street , old council square , poarta schei street .

finally the parade . it is the first sunday after easter and the last day of the days of brasov festival .
the parade and the whole juni festival is an ancient ritual that over the centuries got more complex meanings .
"schei" is a district of brasov (a former village next to the old fortified german city of brasov) where traditions are still strong . junii were ancient military clans . there are 7 groups of juni (aprox. means youngsters) each with their own flag and costumes . it's a tradition and a ritual so everything has to be very specific . for example the order in which they "descent into the citadel" .
here are the flags for the first 4 groups : junii tineri (the young unmarried youngsters) , junii batrani (the old youngsters) , junii curcani (the turkey youngsters) , junii dorobanti .
